In the U.K., the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/travel\/article-2596082\/Easter-holiday-warning-riptides-British-beaches-caused-winter-storms.html\">warning<\/a> spring vacationers that violent winter storms (which many scientists attribute to climate change) have dramatically altered the coastlines. Among the dangers are rip currents in previously safe waters, along with more intense <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rip_current\">rip currents<\/a> elsewhere. (Rip currents are narrow channels of fast-moving water that pull swimmers away from the shore. They\u2019re also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/baby\/features\/rip-current-no-1-beach-danger\">no. 1 killer<\/a> of swimmers every year.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_115\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mypoolsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4594610340_b759c8d3ff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115\" class=\"size-full wp-image-115\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mypoolsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4594610340_b759c8d3ff.jpg\" alt=\"bathers at a beach\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mypoolsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4594610340_b759c8d3ff.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mypoolsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4594610340_b759c8d3ff-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Riptides are more common due to a changing sea bottom, but climate change brings other threats, too. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/\">Parker Knight<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Some experts are now concerned that what\u2019s happening in the U.K. is happening worldwide: <\/span>\u201cThe worry is that a continued rise in sea level could change the sea bottom near the coast, shrinking the beach area and changing the bathymetry [<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">yes, this is a word]\u00a0<\/span>of the ocean bottom, in turn making some areas of the beach more susceptible to rip tides,\u201d says <a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climatesciencewatch.org\/2009\/07\/18\/is-climate-change-adding-risks-to-beachgoing-beware-riptides-jellyfish-sharks-the-blob\/\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">one site<\/a> tracking the effects of climate change on beach safety.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">That worry seems to be more than just conjecture. The site notes that local lifeguards are reporting more intense rip currents in places such as South Carolina, where sea levels have risen more dramatically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">More intense rip currents should set off warning bells for lifeguards and swimmers around the world that beaches are less safe than they used to be and rip currents more deadly. (<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.sunysb.edu\/articles\/t\/noaa-and-sea-grant-remind-beachgoers-about-rip-currents-coastal-processes-hazards-news\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">Experts warn<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> that if you\u2019re ever caught in a rip current, don\u2019t fight it! Swim parallel to the shore and then swim at an angle \u2013 away from the current \u2013 toward shore.) So when you head to the beach this summer, pay attention to rip current warnings and take extra precaution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">But more intense rip currents aren\u2019t the only dangers climate change seems to be causing for swimmers. Here are 5 other ways climate change is making beaches less safe:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Jellyfish infestations. In <\/span>Massachusetts<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, authorities were shocked when an influx of poisonous Portuguese Man of War jellyfish stung 14, causing beaches to shut. The jellyfish are normally confined to more tropical waters. Beaches around the world report similar influxes of jellyfish.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Shark attacks. In <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/news\/nation\/2009\/07\/117_47190.html\">Korea<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, shark attacks, once unheard of, have become a serious new problem, also thanks to warming waters. Other areas not prone to shark attacks will likely face similar circumstances.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Algae Blooms. In <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Environment\/Bright-Green\/2009\/0717\/giant-mysterious-blob-found-floating-off-alaska-coast\">Alaska<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, rising ocean temperatures have apparently caused unusual algae blooms that can put swimmers at risk. The same phenomenon is happening worldwide.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Flooding. The evidence is incontrovertible: <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ipcc.ch\/publications_and_data\/ar4\/wg1\/en\/faq-5-1.html\">sea levels<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> are rising. In Australia, authorities have posted <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"https:\/\/research.csiro.au\/coastal-informatics\/index.php\/ozcoasts\/\">sea-level rise scenarios<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> for residents of Perth. In the U.S., scientists warn that all <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"https:\/\/sealevel.climatecentral.org\/\">coastal regions<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> are at risk, especially those in low-laying areas.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>More unstable coasts: Along with more new and more intense rip currents. British authorities are warning that violent winter storms have created shelves of unstable sand that can be deadly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">As the climate continues to change, these kinds of issues will likely become more prevalent, especially in beach communities, which are more susceptible to flooding than ever before.
